"Most modern tattoo systems are ‘needle guns’ that use electrical motors or air pressure to drive a needle like a sewing machine. Kate Massie, a retired tattoo artist, says tattoo equipment can be traced back over 3000 years in Egypt.
"Archaeologist W.M.F. Petrie discovered two different types of ancient tattoo tools in Egypt, according to Cate Lineberry of "Smithsonian Magazine." The first type was a wood-handled tattoo instrument with a sharp point, dating back to 3,000 B.C., found in Abydos, Egypt. A machine invented by Thomas Edison (to engrave metal) was revised by several other people and used to apply ink to the body. The new configuration of the machine came to be known as a tattoo gun.
